The traditional way for a blacksmith to cut metal is on the anvil. This lesson teaches how properly cut metal on the anvil without damaging it or the cutting tools.

Hot Cutting

With the steel heated to red hot (about 1490°F) place the metal on top of the cutting hardie and strike it with the hammer.

Turn the steel over and strike it again to create two facing notches.

Be careful not to go all the way through or you risk damaging the hammer face and the hardy. with some practice the notches can be mad to almost meet. The metal can then be snapped cleanly.
