A lot of the work done on the anvil involves bending. This lesson teaches how to bend hot iron with various parts of the anvil or vise.

Bending On The Anvil

Bending is done by striking the metal to one side of it's support. The blows should be struck in such a way that the the metal is not pinched between the hammer and anvil. Bending i usually done over the horn of the anvil, that is what it is designed for.

For an even curve, work progressively across the horn, hit off center, and alter the hitting points by moving the rod.

With practice you can use the curve of the horn and hammer toward it to get the right shape.

Avoid heavy blows tightly against the anvil. This would pinch and flatten the iron
